22/5/2015 Dexa ScanI have had DEXA Scans done for the last 2yrs as they give a clearer picture than just jumping on the scales. Scales only advise what your overall weight is a DEXA will give you:
Body Fat % Lean Muscle Mass Bone Density * Skeletal Structure Resting Metabolic Rate VAT score (Visceral Adipose Tissue)** Central abdominal fat measurement** (Visceral Adipose Tissue) — a precise quantification of any dangerous fat deposits around your organs *Bone Density is important for everyone, slightly more important for females as we are more prone to Osteoporosis than men. **Visceral Adipose Tissue & Central abdominal fat measurement — a precise quantification of any dangerous fat deposits around your organs and stomach. HIGHLY IMPORTANT especially if you need too or have lost a lot of weight. The scales do not accurately depict whether the weight being lost or gained during a training program is lean muscle, or fat, and therefore a detailed body composition analysis is important. When I started loosing weight it was easy to see, track and follow. The scales and measurements were enough at first and even though they showed my overall weight loss they did not show the fat that I had accumulated around my organs which as we know is the most damgerious in the body. I am a CrossFitter and part of my training is Strength based so I was also putting on muscle mass ALOT of muscle mass and there were weeks when I could feel changes in my body compesition however the scales did not move. This can be soul destroying when you are training hard everyday, eating right 100% AND NOTHING CHANGES on the scales. Dexa's show ALL of this plus more. I have been having my DEXA Scans in Sydney and was VERY excited when Riverside Body Scan opened on The Central Coast. I found them to be highly professional and the combination of having the scan done by a Radiographer and then meeting with Nicky from EatSense who is a Dietician AND one that understands Paleo was a dream come true for me. For athletes, knowing their total body composition is much more valuable than simply measuring fat or weight. A DEXA scan allows athletes and sporting teams to monitor and develop specific training programs that achieve the desired results, develop personalised meal plans and other nutrition strategies, monitoring progress and optimise athletic performance. Athletes are always striving for the perfect body fat to muscle ratio in order to optimise exercise performance. Weight, strength, speed, agility and endurance are highly dependent on body composition. Achieving an ideal lean body mass combined with a personalised training program and diet are all intrinsically linked with optimal athletic performance. Therefore, a DEXA scan is an important tool that allows you to objectively measure the effectiveness of your training and nutrition program, and if changes need to be made.
